Students look forward to Creative Futures

Gower College Swansea has hosted an exciting Creative Futures event, bringing together talent from its fashion, art and design, travel and tourism, hair and makeup, music, and technical theatre production teams.

The spectacular showcase was an exciting collaborative project involving students and staff from the Tycoch, Gorseinon and Llwyn y Bryn campuses.

The aim of the event was to provide learners with a 'live work experience' mirroring the reality of working in the creative industries.

“This is a sector that is hugely important to the UK, both culturally and financially,” says Elinor Franklin, the College’s Learning Area Manager for Visual Arts. “The creative industries contribute billions to the economy and are growing in scale every year – they are thriving and, with these learners in the talent pipeline, the future is looking very bright indeed!”

The event was overseen by the College’s Travel and Tourism students who designed the promotional materials and goody bags.

The Theatre and Live Events Production team staged the event, organising all the music, lighting and staging.

Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up students prepared the models for the catwalk and showcased their creations for stage and screen, and Samsara – a band comprising Music Performance and Production learners - performed a showcase of original material.

Visual Arts students showcased their talents with a range of fashion garments ranging from protest shirts and lino prints, to dresses demonstrating subtraction cutting techniques, waistcoats and quilted jackets.

Photography learners documented the whole event and produced images for promotion in print and through online platforms.

Many of the students involved have recently taken part in Skills Competition Wales events and were celebrated on the day, these included:

Solomon Bunn-Sovin: Fashion Design and Technology, Gold medal winner
Sophie Hockley: Ceramic Craft Skills, Silver medal winner
Emily-Grace Kitchin: Textiles and Surface Pattern Skills, Highly Commended
