Stepping up to STEM

For the past six weeks, pupils from local schools have attended a Saturday Club at Gower College Swansea which aims to develop their skills and enthusiasm for engineering.

The Saturday Club allows pupils to access the expertise of the teaching staff, the industry-specific equipment and on-site facilities of the Tycoch campus.

A festive trip to town for Catering students

Catering and Hospitality students from Gower College Swansea have visited Morgans Hotel in the city centre where they enjoyed a ‘behind the scenes’ tour.

“I wanted my tutor group to explore the types of career opportunities that are available within the hotel industry and to have a look around this fantastic local venue,” says lecturer Stephen Williams, who organised the trip alongside Lucy Turtle from the college’s Reaching Wider team.

Go Kart team building trip a success

Motor Vehicle students from Gower College Swansea enjoyed a recent team building day at Newport's Supakart.

The visit, which was part funded by the College’s Reaching Wider team, allowed the learners to drive petrol powered vehicles around the multi-level indoor circuit.

“The aims of the Reaching Wider project are to increase participation in higher education and improve employment prospects," says lecturer Lucy Turtle. "This was a great opportunity for the students to experience driving go-karts and it really brought out their competitive sides!"

Students face ‘squashed tomato’ challenge

Gower College Swansea’s Reaching Wider team recently played host to Dylan Thomas Community School, where Year 9 pupils took part in a practical engineering-focused activity called ‘The Squashed Tomato Challenge.’

This fun hands-on and brains-on challenge has been developed by Practical Action and is based on a real life problem affecting people in Nepal, where many farmers living on the mountainside grow fruit and vegetables, including tomatoes.
