Overview

Throughout the year we will run three, independent, 10 week courses on Silversmithing.

Plain thin silver bangle

Course one

Students will design and make a silver bangle, cuff or bracelet, and explore working with other materials and silver, for example silver clay, recycling, mixed metals combining copper, silver, brass, and gold.

Textured silver rings

Course two

Students will learn a range of texturing and forming techniques to include reticulation, doming, fold forming, using the rolling mill for texturing silver and using hammers and stakes; and will then design and make a piece of silver jewellery using any of these techniques.

Tube setting stones in silver

Course three

Students will design and produce a piece of jewellery inspired by a silversmith of your choice, whilst learning further stone setting techniques such as tube setting and simple basket setting. This will encourage students to develop their own individual style of jewellery making, whilst preparing students for progression on to the more advanced silversmithing courses.

Key information

Some previous experience necessary, such as our ‘Silversmithing – Beginner’ course.

Learners will make a piece of jewellery to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding and their competence in practice.

There is progression throughout the year, however each silversmithing course can be independent of the others – basic skills will be taught on each course as needed.

The course is delivered through face-to-face sessions in a well-equipped silversmithing studio - all tools are provided.

A range of assessment methods can be used:

  • Direct observation of practice
  • Oral questioning / professional discussion
  • Evaluation of their final piece
  • Health and safety will be observed throughout.

We offer a ‘Silversmithing - Specialist Workshop’ which is a natural next step for anyone completing this intermediate course.

Learners can also progress into self-employment (or employment), or to other courses in the jewellery field.

Studio fee of £15.

Students will need to buy their own silver, which is available from www.cooksongold.com. The cost of materials will depend on the individual designs and choice of stones. There will be at least one project to complete on each course.

Part-time courses enrolment update

We're currently upgrading our systems, so online enrolment for part-time courses is temporarily unavailable.

If you'd like to enrol, please visit our Tycoch Campus, where our team will be happy to help.

Thank you for your patience while we complete these improvements.
