Poetry workshop inspires students

Award-winning poet and journalist Rae Howells has paid a visit to the Gorseinon campus to hold a creative workshop with A Level English students.

Rae, a former student of the college, talked about her career to date before giving a poetry reading and setting the students a writing challenge based on a news story and series of photographs.

Gower College Swansea is launching a brand new initiative aimed at maximising employability and in-work progression in the Swansea area.

The Better Jobs, Better Futures programme will work alongside the college’s existing upskilling programmes to support unemployed people in finding work, while helping those already in employment to secure better jobs through individually tailored advice and mentoring.

College appoints new Director of HR

Gower College Swansea has appointed a brand new Director of Human Resources – one with a very familiar face - as Sarah King, who joined the College in September, previously worked at Swansea College as a HR Employee Relations Advisor.

Sarah, who is from Swansea, has spent the last 11 years at Bridgend College where she held the position of Vice Principal HR and Wellbeing.

College launches HE+ for new academic year

Gower College Swansea has welcomed over 250 learners to the Gorseinon campus for the launch of the HE+ programme* for 2017/18.

Gower College Swansea, at the invitation of and in collaboration with, the University of Cambridge, is the ‘hub’ institution in the Swansea HE+ Consortium, working with the seven state sixth-form schools in the City and County of Swansea.

Enterprise Manager Sue Poole in the running for two awards

Sue Poole, Enterprise Manager at Gower College Swansea and CEO / Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Education (C4EE) has been shortlisted for not one but two awards over the coming weeks.

Sue, who set up the award-winning C4EE in 2014, has been nominated in the ‘#GoDo Entrepreneur of the Year’ category at the 2017 NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards taking place in Cardiff on 4 October.

Urdd sport training success for student

Rebecca Jones, an A Level student from Gower College Swansea, recently joined the Urdd for a sports training weekend in Aberystwyth.

Working in partnership with Aberystwyth University, 'SuperTeams' were created where young people from across Wales got together and competed in a variety of sports activities including basketball, swimming, athletics and ball-avoid.

Welsh treats for new International students

Gower College Swansea's International department held a ‘city centre orientation’ event for its new cohort of students.

The highlight of the day was trying cockles, laverbread and Welsh cakes at Swansea Market – a big thank you to them for providing delicious free tasters! 

In total, the Gorseinon campus has welcomed 36 new international A Level students this September from countries such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Egypt.

ESOL student becomes sports ambassador

A Gower College Swansea student has returned from a four-day visit to Bulgaria as part of an Erasmus+ sports project.

The trip came about after ESOL tutors at the college were approached by ColegauCymru to see if any of their students would like to apply for the role of Youth Sports Development Ambassador (YSDA).
