Access students gain career guidance

Current students on Gower College Swansea’s Access to Higher Education programme met up with former students, who are now working in their dream jobs, for career advice at the Tycoch campus.

The Access programme is aimed at students aged 18 and above who wish to return to education after a break or are looking for qualifications for a change of career, preparing them for study at university.

Two students selected for WMC performance

Two students from Gower College Swansea have been selected to be part of the Wales Millennium Centre's exciting 'Lord of the Flies' production, following auditions across Wales. Brothers Anthony and Amukelani Matsena have a real flair and passion for dance. Alongside their academic studies – they are currently taking A Levels in maths, chemistry, physics and dance - they are rehearsing intensively with professional dancers from the production as well as continuing their work with the County Youth Dance Company (CYDC).

Music industry veteran inspires students

A Level Music Technology students at Gower College Swansea got to hear from a true industry veteran recently.

Gill Taylor has 38 years experience in the music world and has worked with artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, Blondie and Meatloaf. For the last 23 years she has managed Elvis Costello.

College celebrates Diversity Week

Gower College Swansea will host its annual Diversity Fayres on Tuesday 21 October (Tycoch campus - main hall) and Thursday 23 October (Gorseinon campus - main hall / D4) from 10am to 2pm.

There is a packed programme on offer with African drumming, street dance, Indian Bollywood dance, Chinese dance, Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) and live music and dance performances by students.

Students and community groups will be running stalls with various activities, competitions, demos and displays and there will also be an International buffet.

Bu criw o fyfyrwyr a staff Coleg Gŵyr Abertawe yn cymryd rhan yn y diwrnod arbennig yma i ddathlu’r Gymraeg, gan ddechrau sgwrs gyda ‘Shwmae?’. Dros sawl campws anogwyd ein myfyrwyr i gychwyn sgwrs gyda ‘Shwmae?’ drwy dynnu llun o’u hunain gyda #ShwmaeSumae.

Digital Technology students head to Big Bang UK

A group of Digital Technology students at Gower College Swansea have been selected by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) to attend the Big Bang Fair UK.

Corey Nixon, Christopher Protheroe, Chantelle Simpson and Declan Wells will attend the event at the Birmingham NEC in March 2015, one of just 15 groups from around the UK to be invited.

Gold award for Hannah's lagoon design

Hannah Davies, a second year A Level Design & Technology student from the Gorseinon campus of Gower College Swansea, has received the British Science Association’s prestigious Gold Crest Award.

The award was given to Hannah for her work as a designer and illustrator on the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon Engineering project where her main task was to design an additional feature enabling the production of renewable energy.

European Enterprise Promotion Awards 2014: Primary to Professional receives ‘Special Mention’ at SME Assembly

At the 2014 SME Assembly in Naples, the Primary to Professional project has received Special Mention in the ‘Investing in Entrepreneurial Skill’ category at the European Enterprise Promotion Awards.

The Primary to Professional (P2P) project, which is led by Gower College Swansea in collaboration with Swansea Council, the Welsh Government, primary and secondary schools, higher education providers, Tech Hub and other business partners, seeks to build the enterprise skills of young people by providing bespoke courses.

Swans star inspires students with motivational talk

Swansea City footballer Ashley Williams recently surprised students at Gower College Swansea's Gorseinon campus when he dropped in to give a motivational talk.

During a Q&A session with the students, he and Sports lecturer Duane Saunders discussed his life and career, his motivations for reaching the level that he has and his role models. Ashley also spoke about his parents' influence and his desire to succeed to make their life better.
