Web Design and IT Technician WorldSkills finals

Gower College Swansea has hosted the Web Design and IT Technician WorldSkills finals at the Tycoch campus, which attracted teams from colleges across Wales.

Claire Rees, the Learning Area Manager for Technology, commented: “The day provided excellent experience for all the students who participated. The dedication of the college IT teaching team, the IT technicians and the external funding team in preparing for this event ensured a successful day for everyone involved."

College hosts WorldSkills finals

Gower College Swansea hosted the WorldSkills All-Wales finals for Accounting Technician Skills on Wednesday 12th March. Sketty Hall, the college’s centre for accountancy and a range of other professional courses, was buzzing with activity all day. Several accounting challenges were presented to each of the 19 teams, which had come from colleges all over Wales. Guest speaker at the event was Sandra McAlister of McAlister & Co, Insolvency Practitioners.

Students hit the Big Apple!

A group of Gower College Swansea A level students headed to New York for a recent field trip.

The 39 students from A level Geography, Politics and World Development courses visited the Big Apple from Monday 3rd to Saturday 8th March and packed a lot in to the 5 day trip! Along with sightseeing some of the city’s most iconic landmarks the students were able to study migration and sustainability in New York as well as tour the United Nations headquarters, Capitol Hill and watch a live vote in the American Senate.

Translation a success at Gower College Swansea

A Level French and Spanish students at Gower College Swansea have been inspired by a visit from Anna Bastek, CEO of Wolfestone Translation Ltd, who spoke about the exciting opportunities that translation offers. Her speech was described as “inspirational” by one student and the students were all amazed at the career opportunities translation offers. The visit was organised by Lucy Turtle, the college Enterprise Project Officer, as part of the Dynamo Role-Model programme.

Alex comes out on top in WJEC Electronics exam

Alex Jones, a candidate from Gower College Swansea, was the best performer from a South Wales centre in last summer’s WJEC AS Electronics examination. In recognition of his achievement in gaining the highest marks, the Institute of Engineering and Technology awarded Alex a cheque for £200. The presentation was made by Steve Watts, Chair of the IET Wales South East Network.

Alex has now progressed to study Electronic Engineering at the University of South Wales.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has awarded one of its key learning providers, Gower College Swansea, with the highly sought-after Platinum Approved Learning Partner - making it the only FE college of the kind currently in the UK.

This can be attributed to the outstanding commitment to training and student support by staff at the college and the ability to meet the challenging quality assurance measures and performance indicators set-out by ACCA.

Community Farm project for ILS students

A group of students from the Tycoch campus of Gower College Swansea are involved in a project at the Swansea Community Farm at Cadle. Those taking part are all students with additional needs, aged between 16 and 18, who are on the first year of the Work Preparation course. They will be visiting the farm once a week for 10 weeks in order to learn more about where the food on the supermarket shelves comes from and how it is produced. It will also help them with numeracy and literacy skills.
