Nursing and midwifery taster day

We organised a Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work Taster Day jointly with Hywel TEifi Academy, Swansea University for those students who have an interest in following a career in those fields.

The day was organised by our Welsh Manager, Anna Davies, “The aim was to encourage Welsh-medium students to study their Nursing, Midwifery or Social Work course in Welsh at Swansea University, and apply for an incentive scholarship that is attached to those courses.”

Opportunity Knocks for ILS students

Gower College Swansea have successfully launched a series of new work internships with students in the independent living skills (ILS) department, working up to five days a week in various sectors in Morriston Hospital and the wider community.

Students are being recognised by big name employers as valuable contributors in the workplace and these budding partnerships are also giving opportunities to students with additional learning needs (ALN) to gain work experience to evidence on their CVs and find paid employment.

Welsh students with Adam yn yr Ardd

Adam in the Garden, Hill House

We’ve been lucky enough to have Adam Jones aka Adam yn yr Ardd, a renowned gardener, visit Hill House to teach our Welsh language gardening group. Adam works with level 1- 2 students and the purpose of these weekly practical sessions is to include the Welsh language in a vocational setting. These tailored sessions will be a way of showing our students that the Welsh language is alive beyond classroom doors and that it is possible to work through the medium of Welsh.

GCS Owls Esports Bootcamp

Students participate in first GCS Owls Esports Bootcamp

Over 40 students from sites all over Gower College Swansea enjoyed their first GCS Owls bootcamp event during half term at the Esports room in Ward 4, Hill House, Tycoch Campus. 

The students were invited to participate in a full day of activities from 9am to 6pm that included coaching sessions, talks from special guests, leading industry experts from all over the world, competitive scrims against other colleges, fun tournaments and team-building games.

Gower College Swansea has been commended for its best practice and innovation in two separate categories in the 2022/23 Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Awards.

The Association of Colleges’ Beacon Awards celebrate the best and most innovative practice among UK Colleges. They are awarded every year by AoC to provide recognition for excellence while acknowledging the talents of staff at all levels. They highlight the breadth and quality of education in the College sector.

Students talk politics with The Lord Aberdare

Students from Gower College Swansea recently had the opportunity to meet The Lord Aberdare – Alastair John Lyndhurst Bruce – when he visited the Gorseinon Campus as part of the Learn with the Lords programme.

The learners, who are studying A Level Government and Politics and A Level Law, spent over an hour with The Lord Aberdare and had an opportunity to discuss many pressing political topics of the day with him.
