GCS apprentice has Russia in his sights

An apprentice from Gower College Swansea has become the first Welsh student to make the Worldskills UK Squad in the sector of Industrial Electronics.

James Williams, who works at Haven Automation in Fforestfach, will now undergo two years of intensive specialist training which could take him all the way to the Worldskills World Finals in Kazan, Russia, in 2019.

Chemistry Olympiad success for students

A Level Chemistry students at Gower College Swansea have performed extremely well once again at the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad, which saw over 5300 young people participate in 2017.

The annual event is open to second year A Level students who are expected to achieve grades of A or A* in their exams, and is a challenging exercise that truly stretches the most committed young chemists.

Four candidates – Ivan Gelemerov, Matthew Brown, Aaron Robey and Briall Baker - achieved Silver certificates and one - Joshua Davies – gained a Certificate of Participation.

GCS students compete at AoC Sport National Championships

Students from Gower College Swansea competed at the recent AoC Sport National Championships in Nottingham, coming home with a Gold medal (in Ladies Rugby) as they helped the Welsh region to finish in tenth place.

Over 30 students - competing in a range of sports including football, netball, hockey, rugby, cross country and ladies football - travelled from the college to the University of Nottingham where they battled against athletes from colleges across England and Wales during the three-day event.

Rhys scoops Silver for his 'tea for two'

ILS student Rhys Harvey has taken a Silver medal at the Inclusive Skills cookery competition, held in Newtown earlier this week.

For the competition, Rhys was required to make a delicious afternoon tea for two within a time frame of just 1.5 hours.

"Well done Rhys, myself and the entire ILS department are all very proud of your achievement," says Learning Area Manager Mark Clement.

Fingers crossed for Ryan!

Following the recent (and final) selection process, Gower College Swansea is eagerly awaiting news on whether Hospitality student Ryan Kenyon has been selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017*.

Ryan’s competition journey began in March 2014 when he represented the college in the WelshSkills Food Service competition – the following year he entered the same competition and secured a Bronze medal.

Skills Competition success for electronics student

A 22 year-old from Gower College Swansea has won a Gold medal in the electronics final of a national skills competition.

Backed by the Welsh Government through the European Social Fund, Skills Competition Wales is a series of events held in colleges across the country, designed to celebrate vocational skills and create highly skilled, award winning employees for the Welsh workforce.

Sporting students head to AoC National Championships

Over 30 students from Gower College Swansea have qualified to represent the region at the AoC Sport National Championships 2017.

The students – specialising in a range of different sports including football, netball, hockey, rugby, golf, cross country and ladies football - fought off stiff competition from colleges across the UK for the chance to participate in the national finals at the University of Nottingham and surrounding facilities on 21-23 April.

GCS Mens Football team through to British Colleges final

Gower College Swansea's Mens Football team has reached the final of the British Colleges Elite Football Cup after a stunning 5-2 victory over Heart of Worcestershire College in the semi finals.

"This is a truly fantastic achievement and we are all incredibly proud of the team," says Learning Area Manager Marcus Westmoreland. "We now turn our attention towards the final which will be held at St Andrews - home of Birmingham City FC - on 3 May."

Congratulations to Catering students

Catering students Collette Gorvett and Paige Jones represented Gower College Swansea at the SkillsCompetition Wales final at Cardiff and Vale College yesterday.

They had to a) prepare a variety of table layups b) prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails within a time frame and c) cook and present Steak Diane in the restaurant under the watchful eye of the judges.
