A day out in Bath

A group of our International students enjoyed an exciting trip to one of Britain’s most appealing cities.

They visited the Roman Baths and spent time at the award-winning Bath Christmas Market.

The group also had time to browse the artisan goods and tuck in to some delicious street food.

Teacher training programme a success

Gower College Swansea recently welcomed teachers from Zhuzhou, Hunan, China to participate in a short teacher training programme.

Our Chinese guests observed a range of different A Level classes and taught sessions and also participated in a cultural exchange event, with some of our current Chinese students performing in the role of interpreters.

The International team would sincerely like to thank everybody who helped with the programme and we look forward to welcoming more Chinese teachers in the New Year.

Festive fun

International students had a great time getting into the festive spirit at Swansea’s Waterfront Winterland.

The evening started off with an ice skating session followed by all the fun of the fairground.

It was wonderful to see our students relaxing together before they break up for their Christmas holidays.

Top marks for our International mathematicians

Gower College Swansea recently hosted a regional heat for the Senior Team Mathematics Challenge, a competition coordinated by the United Kingdom Maths Trust and sponsored by Rolls Royce.

Over 1200 teams took part this year and International students Jonas, Faye, Jasmine and Tony, who are all from China, secured first place in their heat.

This is the second consecutive year that our international students have won the regional championship. They will now proceed to the national finals in London next February.

A great performance and result all round!

Table tennis success for International student

Congratulations to International student Jarret-Yuzhe Zhang on winning the Welsh Colleges Table Tennis Championship.

Jarret, who is from Singapore, scooped first place by defeating the reigning champion - and fellow GCS student - Jacob Young.

The two, who are good friends and often practice together, will go on to represent Wales in the National Championships next April.

When congratulated, Jarret said he felt really proud to have won and to hold up a Welsh flag.

Well we’re all very proud of you too Jarret – well done!

The girls did good!

Second year International students have donated original artwork for greeting cards to raise money for Children in Need.

Maggie and Iris, who both study fine art and textiles and Trista, a photography student, supplied the fabulous images.

Sale of the cards generated almost £100.

In addition, the International Office organised a stall selling Pudsey merchandise and fortune cookies and managed to tot up just over £200.

International students aiming high

Seven International A Level students have applied to study at either Cambridge or Oxford University in September 2019.

All of these students achieved at least three A grades in their AS exams and have already received offers from world renowned universities such as Imperial College London, UCL and London School of Economics.

All students completed their Oxbridge aptitude assessments over half term and are now waiting to see if they will be given an interview.

We wish all College students the very best of luck with their Oxbridge applications.

College signs educational partnership agreement

International Manager Kieran Keogh has signed an educational partnership agreement with Britlink, a subsidiary of the large Singapore based Dimensions Education Group, to deliver vocational qualifications throughout Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

In partnership with Britlink, Gower College Swansea will offer Level 2 and 3 qualifications in a business related discipline from early 2019.

How green is my valley?

International Students got together to take in the great views of the Garw Valley during their half term visit to Bryngarw Country Park.

They enjoyed exploring the woodland paths and having fun in the play area - especially going down its gigantic slide.

Afterwards the group spent time at  McArthurGlen Shopping Centre, grabbing a bite to eat and stocking up on their favourite goods.

Once again the sun shone brightly and some of the students said they couldn’t believe just how green the Welsh countryside is.

The sun shines on International students!

Some of Gower College Swansea's new International students enjoyed the spectacular views of Rhosilli Bay at the weekend.

Basking in glorious sunshine, the students trekked to the lookout house at Worms Head and then headed down to the beach where they participated in games of football, Frisbee and tag.

It was sunshine and smiles all around with one student commenting that Rhosilli was 'the most beautiful place' she had ever visited.
