Students make their mark at the Salon Cymru competitions

Gower College Swansea hairdressing students had a good day at the recent Salon Cymru competitions held at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.

Keiron Burgess, a Level 3 student, came third in the Bridal competition and another Level 3 student, Emily Davies, took second place in the Ladies Cut and Colour category.

Salon Cymru is a contemporary competition open to hairdressing and beauty learners from schools, colleges and training providers.

Jonathan Rogers to join Music teaching team

Gower College Swansea has appointed a new Curriculum Leader for A Level Music and he is a very familiar face within the local music community.

Jonathan Rogers, a former student of the College, is currently Head of Music in Penyrheol Comprehensive and has an excellent reputation as conductor, arranger, soloist and musical director.

Award represents turnaround for Joshua

Plumbing student Joshua D’Auria has returned to Gower College Swansea for the new term with a Young Apprentice of the Year award under his belt.

He scooped the award over the summer at the Swansea Bay Young Achievers event, held in association with Nation Hits.

The award, and the nomination from his lecturers, represented a real turnaround for Josh who had no formal qualifications when he joined the college.

Maths students celebrate 100% module success

A group of AS and A Level Mathematics students at Gower College Swansea have been congratulated after obtaining 100% in one or more modules, including Core Mathematics, Further Pure, Mechanics and Statistics, in their external examinations.

Four students - Katherine Barrowman, Jamie Dougherty, Emily Olsen and Cheng-Ting Tu – achieved 100% in three modules, while Hal Startin achieved 100% in four and Tudor Evans achieved 100% in five.

Primary to Professional collects award from Westminster

The team behind an innovative Swansea project that helps kick-start the careers of budding entrepreneurs from primary schools, secondary schools, Further and Higher Education has collected an award from Westminster.

The Primary to Professional (P2P) project, which is led by Gower College Swansea in collaboration with Swansea Council, the Welsh Government, primary and secondary schools, higher education providers, Tech Hub and other business partners, seeks to build the enterprise skills of young people by providing bespoke courses.

Sri Lanka Developments

British Cosmetics recently approached Gower College Swansea’s agent in Sri Lanka with an interest in developing a partnership in delivering UK standard L3 qualifications to their students.

The college will now work with British Cosmetics to provide quality assurance, staff and curriculum training support. In addition, staff from the Broadway Hair, Beauty and Holistics Centre will deliver masterclasses and workshops for hairdressing professionals in Sri Lanka.

European visits

Around 50 STEM students had the opportunity to travel to Europe for three-week work placements during 2013/14.

Digital Technology students headed to Germany, IT students to Denmark, Motor Vehicle students to Netherlands and Engineering students to Malta. In addition, Plumbing and Electrical apprentices travelled to Finland and Malta.

Gower College Swansea students at the Broadway Hair, Beauty and Holistics Centre have been busy raising money for charity. The full time Level 3 Hairdressing students presented a cheque for over £300 to Lucia Smith from Maggie’s.

Sean wins Institution of Engineering and Technology award

Gower College Swansea student, Sean Sarsfield, has won the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Further Education award for south west Wales. The presentation was made by the Chairman for the 2013/2014 session of the IET Local Network for Wales South West.
