New digital technology lab opens at Tycoch

Students at Gower College Swansea will benefit following the official launch of a brand new digital technology lab at the Tycoch campus.

The lab is the result of a very generous sponsorship package from Premier EDA Solutions, which includes a donation of around £500,000 of their sector-leading Altium Designer electronic design software.

Digital Technology students win at EESW!

A team of Digital Technology students from Gower College Swansea have performed exceptionally well at the recent Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) finals at Swansea University Bay Campus - winning the 'Best College in Wales' category.

The winning students - Cody Wilks, Sara Vonk, David Osbourne and Kaleb Thomas - worked alongside Tongfang Global (THTF) for several months to develop their prototype ahead of the event.

Industry giants to assist students with engineering project

Digital Technology students are set to benefit from the continuing links Gower College Swansea has formed with manufacturing giants Tongfang Global (THTF).

For the second consecutive year, the Port Talbot based company has agreed to assist students as they prepare to design and build the very latest Smart TV manufacturing aids for their Engineering Education Scheme Wales project.

German exchange visit a huge success

A group of German apprentices recently spent three weeks at Gower College Swansea, during which time they gained an invaluable insight into the electronics and digital technology industry in South Wales.

As part of their visit, the students toured a range of companies with close links to the college such as Elite Aerials, Zeta Alarm Systems, Trojan Electronics, BSC and TongFang Global.

“Inspecting workshops, warehouses and assembly lines, they were able to compare and contrast with how things are done back home in Stuttgart,” says Curriculum Leader Steve Williams.

Jordan aiming for shooting competition success

A Digital Technology student from Gower College Swansea is getting ready to represent Wales at a four-day CISAAM shooting event at Bisley later this month.

Jordan Thomas, 16, who is following the Level 2 Digital Technology course at the Tycoch campus, has already achieved great success at competitions as part of the Dyfed and Glamorgan AFC.

Jordan has been a member of the Army Cadet Force for three years, progressing from a basic level to being qualified to use a L8582 - or GP - rifle.

College welcomes innovative industry partnership

Students following Gower College Swansea’s Digital Technology programme are set to benefit from sponsorship and possible employment opportunities after the department linked up with an innovative global company.

Based in Swansea, Energist Ltd was founded in 1999 and quickly became a market leader in Pulsed Light (IPL) systems based around its unique VPL variable pulsed light technology. The company has since expanded rapidly, growing a worldwide distribution base and significant sales in South East Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Stefano engineers himself a job

Winning an engineering competition proved just the job for Gower College Swansea student Stefano Amoruso when one of the judges offered him an apprenticeship.

Stefano won the recent WorldSkills UK Industrial Electronics regional final at the Tycoch campus and will now go on to compete at the Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC in November. There is also the potential of a place at the WorldSkills International finals in Abu Dhabi in 2017 in the pipeline.

Apprentice earns top award

A Gower College Swansea Electronics apprentice has scooped a prestigious award from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

Thomas Eynon, an apprentice with Zeta Alarms Systems, has claimed an IET Local Network Award which aims to ‘reward excellence’ in students.

“Since completing his technical certificate at the college and joining Zeta, Tom has not looked back,” says Curriculum Leader Steve Williams. “He is now fully immersed in his modern apprenticeship, putting together an excellent portfolio of evidence.”

GCS students take top two places at SkillsCompetition Wales final

Engineering students from Gower College Swansea took the top two places at the recent SkillsCompetition Electronics all Wales final.

Niko Leuchtenberg and Matthew Sutch, who are studying towards the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Digital Technology) at the Tycoch campus, scooped Gold and Silver respectively at the event at Coleg Cambria.

There were three separate sections to the final – construction of a circuit, prototype of a circuit and a theory examination – which all 15 competitors had to complete within a set time.
