Massive medals haul for Gower College Swansea students

Gower College Swansea is celebrating after students took home a massive 30 medals following the latest round of Skills Competition Wales events.

The learners were invited to a special ‘watch-party’ at the Tycoch campus on 9 March to celebrate as the results came in.

Impressive Skills medal haul for College students

Gower College Swansea is celebrating after scooping an amazing 20 medals at the recent Skills Competition Wales suite of events.

Skills Competition Wales aims to raise the profile of skills in Wales and offers students, trainees and apprentices a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.

The competitions provide an opportunity for vocational learners to showcase and gain recognition for their skills in their chosen sector and to progress onto national and international competitions.

Media medal haul for Gower College Swansea

Seven Gower College Swansea students have medalled in the Media and Creative category of Skills Competition Wales.

Congratulations to Pariyah, a band consisting of Jasmin Eagles, Dylan Hodges, Alexa Jones-Young, Matthew Thirwell and Eleri Van Block in the Popular Music competition; Leah Jones in the Visual Merchandising competition and Wiktoria Nebka in the Fashion Design and Technology competition.

Students prepare for Forensics skills competition

Two Applied Science students from Gower College Swansea are preparing for a regional competition that will put their powers of forensic investigation to the test.

Erin Doek and Leon Harris, who are studying the BTEC Level 3 course at the Tycoch Campus, are the first students from the College to participate in the SkillsCompetitionWales Forensic Science event, which takes place at Coleg Gwent on 31 January.

On the day, Erin and Leon will be up against four other teams faced with a realistic crime scenario to analyse and investigate.

Crème de la Crème

Congratulations to Charlotte Robinson, Level 3 Hospitality and Catering student, who was awarded Gold in the WelshSkills final of the Advanced Patisserie and Confectionery competition recently held at Coleg Llandrillo.

Competing against eight candidates, in just two and a half hours Charlotte was required to create four portions of a plated dessert (to include three separate components) and a tempered chocolate garnish.

Hat trick for GCS students at Worldskills competition

Gower College Swansea students took the top three places at the recent Worldskills Industrial Electronics regional heat at the Tycoch campus.

In first place was Stefano Amoruso, followed by Matthew Sutch and Niko Leuchtenberg.

The students' results will now be scored against the other regions (including England and Ireland) and, if they make the top 12 in the country, they will represent Wales and the UK in the NEC national finals in November.

College hosts Skills Competition Wales regional heat for Hairdressing

Gower College Swansea recently hosted a regional final of the Skills Competition Wales in Advanced Cut and Colour (hairdressing).

Stylists from across South Wales gathered at the Broadway Hair, Beauty and Holistic Centre to demonstrate their talent with the scissors and spray.

The panel of judges included industry professionals Mike Morgan Swinhoe from M’s International, Lara Johnson, Vicky Jones from Unique Hair Design and salon director and ex-student Casey Coleman.
