Hat trick for GCS students at Worldskills competition

Gower College Swansea students took the top three places at the recent Worldskills Industrial Electronics regional heat at the Tycoch campus.

In first place was Stefano Amoruso, followed by Matthew Sutch and Niko Leuchtenberg.

The students' results will now be scored against the other regions (including England and Ireland) and, if they make the top 12 in the country, they will represent Wales and the UK in the NEC national finals in November.

Engineering student collects manufacturing award

Gower College Swansea Engineering student Amadou Khan recently picked up an award at the prestigious EEF Future Manufacturing Awards at Cardiff City Stadium

Amadou took Bronze in the Pathway to Apprenticeship (PTA) Student of the Year category.

Amadou was a PTA student during 2013/14 and demonstrated an excellent attitude towards every aspect of the programme, including his work placement at AAH Pharmaceuticals. Upon completion of the PTA, he progressed onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

GCS students take top two places at SkillsCompetition Wales final

Engineering students from Gower College Swansea took the top two places at the recent SkillsCompetition Electronics all Wales final.

Niko Leuchtenberg and Matthew Sutch, who are studying towards the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Digital Technology) at the Tycoch campus, scooped Gold and Silver respectively at the event at Coleg Cambria.

There were three separate sections to the final – construction of a circuit, prototype of a circuit and a theory examination – which all 15 competitors had to complete within a set time.

Music students take top prizes at SkillsCompetition Wales regional heat

Bands comprising Level 3 Vocational Music students from Gower College Swansea swept the board at the recent SkillsCompetition Wales Popular Music regional heat.

The students, from the Extended Diploma course at the Llwyn y Bryn campus, competed against musicians from eight other colleges across Wales, performing two original songs each before a panel of judges.

Zen Dogs took Gold and Inscape were awarded Bronze at the event at Theatr Ffwrnes in Llanelli.

Success is sweet for Charlotte

Gower College Swansea Catering student Charlotte Walker has taken Silver at the SkillsCompetition Wales Patisserie final.

Charlotte, who is studying for her VRQ Level 2 Professional Cookery qualification at the Tycoch campus, competed against eight other students on the day.

For the event, Charlotte prepared a delicious selection of sweet treats comprising decorated roulade filled with crème pâtissière, almond sable biscuits and a melting middle soufflé pudding in just three hours.

Enterprise students scoop Ian Bennett Award

A team of students from Gower College Swansea has scooped the Ian Bennett Award at the Global Enterprise Challenge Grand Final in Cardiff.

Vocational Creative Media students Kieran Palfrey, Talisha Weston and Oliver Draper and A Level students Brad David, Rhys Cozens, Shazia Ali and Josh David-Reed represented the college at the Wales Millennium Centre.

The Ian Bennett Award is given to the team voted as the 'most fun, most helpful and most supportive' by other students over the two day challenge.

Urdd Eisteddfod Success

Congratulations to Katherine Rees and Emily Olsen who achieved First place in the Loughor round of the Urdd Eisteddfod at Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr on 6 March.

Emily was competing in the under-19 piano solo and Katherine in the female solo. We had a long, but highly entertaining, evening and there was great praise for them both. The County Eisteddfod will be held at Ysgol Gyfun Bryntawe on the 20 March.

A group of Art students from Llwyn y Bryn, Tycoch and Gorseinon also took part in the Art, Design and Technology competitions. The results were:

College hosts Skills Competition Wales regional heat for Hairdressing

Gower College Swansea recently hosted a regional final of the Skills Competition Wales in Advanced Cut and Colour (hairdressing).

Stylists from across South Wales gathered at the Broadway Hair, Beauty and Holistic Centre to demonstrate their talent with the scissors and spray.

The panel of judges included industry professionals Mike Morgan Swinhoe from M’s International, Lara Johnson, Vicky Jones from Unique Hair Design and salon director and ex-student Casey Coleman.

Digital Technology students head to Big Bang UK

A group of Digital Technology students at Gower College Swansea have been selected by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) to attend the Big Bang Fair UK.

Corey Nixon, Christopher Protheroe, Chantelle Simpson and Declan Wells will attend the event at the Birmingham NEC in March 2015, one of just 15 groups from around the UK to be invited.
