What a Result! competition winners announced

Students stocked up on some autumn/winter clothing essentials after winning vouchers for Outfit stores in a competition, organised by the South Wales Evening Post and Gower College Swansea, to celebrate A Level and GCSE results.

Sophie Davis, Hafina John, Masuma Aktar and Alice Linforth picked up their £100 vouchers from Andrew Thomas, manager of Outfit in Fforestfach. The fifth winner, Chloe Doyle, was unable to attend.

Students make their mark at the Salon Cymru competitions

Gower College Swansea hairdressing students had a good day at the recent Salon Cymru competitions held at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.

Keiron Burgess, a Level 3 student, came third in the Bridal competition and another Level 3 student, Emily Davies, took second place in the Ladies Cut and Colour category.

Salon Cymru is a contemporary competition open to hairdressing and beauty learners from schools, colleges and training providers.

Award represents turnaround for Joshua

Plumbing student Joshua D’Auria has returned to Gower College Swansea for the new term with a Young Apprentice of the Year award under his belt.

He scooped the award over the summer at the Swansea Bay Young Achievers event, held in association with Nation Hits.

The award, and the nomination from his lecturers, represented a real turnaround for Josh who had no formal qualifications when he joined the college.

Creative writing competition is a winner

Gower College Swansea has held a creative writing competition to which all AS English students were invited to submit entries consisting of short stories, dramatic monologues or opening chapters. The entries were judged by Jeanne-Marie Williams, English lecturer, who had organised the competition, who was delighted with the standard of work submitted.

Corey runner up at VQ Learner of the Year Awards

Seventeen year old electronics learner Corey Nixon from Gower College Swansea was a runner up at Wales’ VQ Learner of the Year showpiece awards ceremony on VQ Day at Coleg y Cymoedd’s Nantgarw Campus. He was one of six finalists from across Wales who were all congratulated by Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, Ken Skates.

VQ Day is a national celebration of people who have achieved success in vocational education in Wales.

Students take top three places in the Industrial Electronics World Skills Welsh Regional Final

Gower College Swansea hosted the Industrial Electronics World Skills Welsh Regional Final on 3 June and saw its own students securing first, second and third places! Corey Nixon came out on top, having already won the Welsh Industrial Skills Final. Christopher Protheroe took second place and Chantelle Simpson came third.

Corey was also on the shortlist for the VQ Day Learner of the Year 2014.

Digital Technology students take their winning project to the Senedd

As a result of winning the Best Working Model or Prototype category at the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) competition held at the Celtic Manor hotel in April, the successful Gower College Swansea team of Digital Technology students received an invitation to the Senedd to present the winning project at the Science Education in Wales event. The students represented successful vocational learning practices and attracted considerable interest.
