Stepping up to STEM

For the past six weeks, pupils from local schools have attended a Saturday Club at Gower College Swansea which aims to develop their skills and enthusiasm for engineering.

The Saturday Club allows pupils to access the expertise of the teaching staff, the industry-specific equipment and on-site facilities of the Tycoch campus.

Career opportunities ahoy!

Engineering and Catering / Hospitality students from the Tycoch campus were invited by the Royal Navy to tour HMS Richmond, a ‘type 23’ frigate docked at Cardiff Bay.

“We were warmly received by the Captain and his crew and given an extensive tour of the ship,” says lecturer Mark Row. “This visit will be followed by the Royal Navy’s attending Tycoch to discuss apprenticeship pathways with groups of Engineering and Catering students.”

Gold and Silver medals for GCS students

Gower College Swansea recently hosted a Skills Competition Wales Computer Aided Design (CAD) event which saw entrants from all over Wales gather at the Gorseinon campus.

Four Gower College Swansea Engineering students participated on the day and were very successful - with Scott Fry taking Gold and Brett Nethell taking Silver.

"Last year student Joseph Dickerson achieved Silver so we were delighted to go one better in 2016 and our students pulled off a brilliant team performance," says Curriculum Leader Huw Isaac.

Students explore employment opportunities

Engineering Technology students from Gower College Swansea's Tycoch campus recently visited TIMET in Waunarlwydd.

TIMET is a world leader in the production of titanium for the aerospace, military, oil and gas industries. They are taking on apprentices this summer and invited our students to take a tour of the plant prior to the work experience stage of the recruitment process.

Bright futures for Engineering Technology 'class of 2015'

Gower College Swansea’s Engineering Technology department (Tycoch) has celebrated its most successful Level 3 BTEC cohort to date.

From the graduating class of 2015, seven are heading to top universities around the UK including Swansea, Manchester, Lancashire and Bristol, to study degrees in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, and Computer Aided Engineering, Architecture and Robotics.

A further 14 students have secured apprenticeships with established companies including Tata Steel, 3M, Quartzelec, Wall Colmonoy, Lyte Ladders and A.I.R Precision.

Engineering student collects manufacturing award

Gower College Swansea Engineering student Amadou Khan recently picked up an award at the prestigious EEF Future Manufacturing Awards at Cardiff City Stadium

Amadou took Bronze in the Pathway to Apprenticeship (PTA) Student of the Year category.

Amadou was a PTA student during 2013/14 and demonstrated an excellent attitude towards every aspect of the programme, including his work placement at AAH Pharmaceuticals. Upon completion of the PTA, he progressed onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.

GCS students take top two places at SkillsCompetition Wales final

Engineering students from Gower College Swansea took the top two places at the recent SkillsCompetition Electronics all Wales final.

Niko Leuchtenberg and Matthew Sutch, who are studying towards the Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (Digital Technology) at the Tycoch campus, scooped Gold and Silver respectively at the event at Coleg Cambria.

There were three separate sections to the final – construction of a circuit, prototype of a circuit and a theory examination – which all 15 competitors had to complete within a set time.

Engineering students face mock interviews

Level 3 BTEC Engineering students from Gower College Swansea recently attended mock interview sessions with local employers at an event organised by the college's Enterprise Officer Lucy Turtle and Gareth Price from Career Wales.

“The main aims of this event were to prepare students for the world of work and provide advice and guidance on developing their CVs and interviewing skills,” said Lucy.

Among the employers were Tata Steel, Swansea University and the Armed Forces, who all gave structured feedback to the students after their interviews were complete.
