College hosts Welsh Language Music Day

Gower College Swansea’s Gorseinon campus was full to the brim when it celebrated Welsh Language Music Day – a national day established to celebrate modern Welsh language music.

The BBC Wales Horizons project visited the College with a variety of new artists with Alasdair Gunneberg, Roughion, Eadyth, Hana2K and Marged playing the acoustic stage in the ground floor common room.  In addition, Connor Thomas, one of the College’s DJs, used a large boombox to play dance music outside the campus reception.

Success for college swimmer

Gower College Swansea student Niamh Jones, who is studying for her A Levels at the Gorseinon campus, took part in the recent Urdd National Swimming Gala where she received a Bronze medal in the breaststroke event.

Niamh was competing against pupils and students from all over Wales in the 16-19 age category.

Students explore Welsh performance opportunities

A group of Welsh students studying performance-related courses at Gower College Swansea have visited the talented team who run a BA Performance course at the Welsh Centre for Performance at the Gate in Cardiff – a course which is taught through the medium of Welsh.

Our students had an opportunity to take part in acting, dancing and singing workshops led by Eiry Thomas, Jackie Bristow, Elen Bowman and Eilir Owen Griffiths. It was a day packed full of fun and learning, all while promoting the Welsh language in this subject area.

Urdd sport training success for student

Rebecca Jones, an A Level student from Gower College Swansea, recently joined the Urdd for a sports training weekend in Aberystwyth.

Working in partnership with Aberystwyth University, 'SuperTeams' were created where young people from across Wales got together and competed in a variety of sports activities including basketball, swimming, athletics and ball-avoid.

Welcoming Welsh speakers to the College

This year, for the first time, Gower College Swansea held a Welcome Day for Welsh-speaking young people who have applied to start college in September.  The aim of the day was to help new students become familiar with the campus, meet other Welsh speaking applicants, meet Welsh speaking staff, and learn about the Welsh language opportunities at college.

Students enjoy sport conference

A group of L3 Sport students on the Gorseinon campus visited a ‘Bilingualism in Sport’ conference at Cardiff and Vale College.

The day was organised by the college, following sponsorship from CollegesWales, with the aim of promoting the Welsh language in sport. There was an interesting session from Huw Llywelyn Davies about commentating bilingually for the BBC on rugby, football and cricket games, and students got a taste of commentating on live games.

Celebrating 'Welsh Week'

We had a week full of events to celebrate Welshness in the college around our Patron Saint day - St David’s Day.

The common rooms on every campus were decorated all over with daffodils, yellow and green balloons, Welsh flags and daffodil and leek bunting from pillar to pillar. Of course there was plenty of free Welsh cakes for students as well!
