Digital Technology students take their winning project to the Senedd

As a result of winning the Best Working Model or Prototype category at the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) competition held at the Celtic Manor hotel in April, the successful Gower College Swansea team of Digital Technology students received an invitation to the Senedd to present the winning project at the Science Education in Wales event. The students represented successful vocational learning practices and attracted considerable interest.

The students had been working with a new company, Tong Fang Global, which recently opened a new factory on the Kenfig Hill Industrial Estate, producing flat screen televisions under the SEIKI brand. They were tasked with solving a problem for the company, with a brief to design, build and install a fully integrated reception system to feed signals to the new production lines and test bays. The system was successfully installed in February.

The keynote address at the Senedd event was given by Professor Julie Williams, CBE, Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales. A number of presentations were given during the day, including "Science in Schools - The challenge of enthusing people about STEM Wales-wide", delivered by Peter Trevitt, the Director of Techniquest.

Following the win at the EESW competition, the team has been shortlisted to represent Wales at the Big Bang Event being held at the NEC Birmingham.
