Awards for work placement students

Diweddarwyd 17/06/2014

The achievements of Gower College Swansea’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) students have been recognised at a special celebratory buffet.

Throughout the year, ILS students are placed on work experience with local employers and within college departments such as caretaking and finance. Representatives at the buffet included employers from the Dragon Hotel, Evening Post, Grape & Olive, Radio Tircoed, Remploy, Rose Garden Day Nursery, Sainsbury’s and Swansea University.

It was a difficult job to select just two outstanding work placement students but, on the day, awards were handed out to Harry Widdowson and Charlotte Merrigan. Harry has been placed at the Dragon Hotel as a trainee waiter and Charlotte at the Evening Post as a receptionist assistant.

This event was an occasion to celebrate their hard work and also to thank the employers and mentors who facilitate the placement opportunities.

After the awards had been handed out, guests were treated to a delicious buffet at the Vanilla Pod, prepared and served by the college’s Catering and Hospitality students.

“It was a fantastic event and a really good way of thanking everyone for their contribution throughout the year,” says Work Placement Coordinator Karen McDonald. “It’s so important that ILS students are given the opportunity to learn practical skills through these placements."
